Mistake: You Started With Marketing

2–4 minutes

Most businesses begin with marketing—they think that if they pay for Facebook ads, create content, and maintain a consistent social media presence, suddenly their business will blow up and they’ll make tons of money.

Right?

Well…

A passionate business owner who’s gone through all the innings of making a business successful will tell you that two things are key in securing a sale:

  • Brand Awareness
  • Direct Response

Both serve their purpose, but one has to come first before the other can thrive.

When you think of a successful business, you think of good marketing that generates sales, but how did that business get there? The key to a successful business isn’t the amount of money you spend on Facebook ads—it’s alignment: goal to strategy, then implementation.

It sounds easy, but there are a few things that need to be the cornerstone of your business before you can begin creating Facebook posts that get nowhere.

Great brands define who they are; they carve out a space in this universe and make their presence known with a strategy at their core. And you can do the same thing.

Every good foundation needs these five things:

  • Offer
  • Philosophy
  • Purpose
  • Mission
  • Vision

It brings clarity to who you are, aligns your strategy with your principles, and identifies your unique positioning in a world of businesses.

The next step is to identify the ideal customer you envision supporting your business. Your business is NOT for everyone. It’s for those willing to invest in your offering. You don’t need a million customers; you only need a handful of repeat clientele willing to support you because they see the value you bring to their table.

It’s not about getting the entire world to buy your product. You want the right people to buy it.

When you know your audience, you can plan pricing, promotion, and placement. Your reach is defined, but impactful.

Many businesses are looking for a quick buck and think they need to generate likes and clicks to get it. Some are even willing to pay for it. But the best brands? They’re looking to secure their spot in the world permanently

Investment in your business success is more than just paying for a few Facebook ads. It requires investing in strategy, aligning your goal, and putting in the time and effort to ensure your brand’s messaging is cohesive so it reaches the right people.
