I always wanted to work in the creative industry.
It’s something I knew when I was younger; it was my calling. As I grew up, fashion became my outlet (and it still is). So, when it was time for me to choose a college, it wasn’t surprising that I decided to study fashion design.
After spending four years in New York, I realized that fashion was only a sliver of who I truly wanted to become. Somewhere, deep down, I had a love for organization, color, details, and math. To combine all those unique flavors into something, I had to be intentional.
Illustration and storytelling were my history, and they shaped a part of me that I’ll forever be grateful for.
When I returned to the BVI, I realized that I was still lacking. So, after following several Instagram accounts dedicated to graphic design, I realized that while my interest in fashion was still there, I held something closer to my heart.

College Experience: A Love for Design
There was a semester in college when I took a class focused on business and branding. In fact, I’d taken three classes dedicated to business development and found I enjoyed them. I loved the idea of building a fashion brand.
There was even a point when I grew frustrated with my group because they didn’t fully understand how to market the way I thought they should.
I’d spent most of my college years trying to get away from garment construction, preferring the portfolio and business side of fashion. I loved to create garments, don’t get me wrong. However, I loved business and branding more.

Finding a New Creative Path
The idea of color theory, layouts, patterns, and strategy still appealed to me. I was still an analyst, and I was still a creative at heart.
Still searching for me, I came across a YouTube channel I enjoyed watching. The YouTuber was a passionate young girl sharing her graphic design skills, except she wasn’t doing ‘graphic design’. She introduced me to a new profession that I never thought was possible.
But … let me back up a bit.
Careers that Don’t Exist … Yet
When I moved back to the BVI, I got a job teaching mathematics at the local high school. I remember attending the opening ceremony for the new school year, and one of the guest speakers said something that stuck with me.
He said that nearly half of the students would be hired for professions that don’t currently exist. I began to wonder: was that true for me as well?
When I was a student, there weren’t any careers that quite fit my personality. I knew I wanted to design, but nothing in the creative field quite lined up.
Here I was, a teacher, unhappy with my current situation because I couldn’t put a finger on what I truly wanted to do. I wanted to do something—I just wasn’t sure what that ‘something’ was.
I wanted to go into content creation, but I was backed up with work projects and didn’t have the knack for being in front of a camera. However, before moving to the BVI, I made some short-form content on TikTok and found I loved it.
Before the teaching career took its toll on me, I also found I could do a bit of YouTube if I wanted to. But … I didn’t know what I could talk about.
I wanted to do something I was proud of.
Back to the New Creative Path
So, here I was, watching YouTube, seeing this young girl who was passionate about a career I didn’t know existed.
Brand Design.
I loved branding.
It’s a career that somehow merges business, fashion, and graphics under one neat umbrella. It involves storytelling and strategy, but it’s also creative.
I looked back at my childhood and realized that I’d spent countless years developing brands and businesses (imaginary ones, of course), attempting to satisfy a part of me that I didn’t have a language for.
Now I could help businesses showcase their makeup talent, fashion boutiques, restaurants, clinics, or gadgets through branding.
