As of July 12th, LEGO became the most recent company to pull out of Russia during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Most companies have pulled out to show their support for Ukrainians and send a message to Russia. However, who exactly are these strange embargoes and sanctions really hurting? Certainly, wealthy Russian men and politicians aren’t in desperate need of McDonald’s or a LEGO set.
Currently, the economic crisis being felt worldwide is due to the war in Europe between former Soviet Union countries. The question begs: who does war hurt the most?
While factories that produce these military weapons are making a ton of money, those who truly end up paying the price are the men who fight these unjust wars and the women and children who have now become displaced.
Most of Russia’s oil sales come from the US, and sanctions on oil purchases supposedly ‘starve’ the Russian economy. With nearly 50% of US oil imported from Canada, one might see how feasible this could be.
Although Canada imports oil from Russia, it has also banned Russian oil imports.
In other words, the market price of oil rises, forcing people to pay more than their fair share for fuel. Who suffers? Definitely not the rich.
Pulling a company out of any market doesn’t quite hurt the actual country itself, not when the majority of world leaders know that wealth and power are the only ways to sustain and fuel a war. And war is still taking place in Russia—they’re not as starved as one may think.
Who suffers, however, are the innocent citizens of Russia, Ukraine, and even the US.
Now, the rest of the world suffers because of the disease of corruption and greed. Is pulling out of any country truly a good idea?
Perhaps not.
